Networking and servers • Re: RealVnc retiring Home plan

That's not true. They have to provide relay servers to reach remote VNC servers.
There's no need, per se, to do that though. Back in the day, VNC worked with nothing more than a simple direct TCP connection to a remote server's port 5900...
But then you need to open a port and know the IP. The advantage of Real VNC is to pass through without that.
I maintain many measurement stations located at resident's homes, who would never be able fiddle with their routers.
If I can do with a direct TCP connection, i'd prefer XRDP over VNC.
...Unless they want to gatekeep the traffic to levy a fee... I don't mind paying a few quid for a decent instance of an app, but I'll be blowed if I'm paying a monthly sub to access my own gear.
I would not mid to pay either for relaying, but not monthly a fee that is almost as expensive as my mini cellular plan, that needs a whole backstage infrastructure.
