I use Disks, the Gnome disk utility, in any Linux to write a downloaded image to any bootable storage. The Raspberry Pi imagers also work and have some neat options but I prefer the Disks simplicity.

I create the Pi OS config of my choice on a microSD card for tests then use Disks to create an image of the card then write the image to an SSD when I need more space or speed. Disks can create additional partitions in the spare space on the SSD. Gparted change expand the system partition if I used a small microSD card for the original setup or shrink the system partition when I use a big microSD card.

If you only have a Raspberry Pi computer, a USB-microSD card adaptor lets you plug a second card into the Pi to create a clone or backup image. Disks, Gparted, and everything else can modify the copy.
