The Pico W already is RP2040 board with wireless so those worrying about learning curve and already having Pico W would use just that, no need to add anything more to it.True, but those using RP2040 and Pico are already playing in the Pico W arena, will have all the tools needed, won't need anything more, won't have another learning curve to climb. Many quite likely have Pico and Pico W.

I think people who are getting such boards are doing it for reasons (size, price, extra features) and may not be that much worried about learning curve so I am not sure slapping whole Pico W to the solution will do, it may even negate the reason for using the custom board in the first place. If you need ethernet or display or anything else you will also get something that does not have RP2040 inside and can cope with it, so why not wireless. But sure if adding another Pico W helps then why not.In particular there are plenty of custom RP2040 boards which are appealing but don't have wireless. This should be a route to more easily connecting an additional Pico W to make them wireless capable.
