And you could provide a pre-built '.mpy' for those who don't have MicroPython source and 'mpy-cross' installed.

Pre-built binaries are available in the Releases section. I'll update the README to point this out. That's interesting about MPY_DIR needing to be different though, I'll have to look into that. A config option for absolute jmp addresses is a good idea.
