IIRC the original Raspbian released back then was a third party effort to get Debian booting on the Pi.
Almost. The original OS for the Pi was Debian*, but only the old armel version which didn't use the hardware floating point capability of the Pi's ARMv6 chip and was slow. The armhf version of Debian with hardware floating point support required at least an ARMv7 chip to run.

The Raspbian team took the Debian source code and recompiled it for the specific ARMv6 (1176jzf?) used by the Pi. They started with the essential packages, and expanded to the whole Debian system. The speed difference was significant and the Raspberry Pi team started using the Raspbian packages in their official OS.

* IIRC there were originally plans to use something else (Ubuntu or Red Hat?), but support for ARMv6 was dropped for whichever system it was, so Debian was used instead.

Fair enough. Thanks.
