I occasionally power my phone from the car's 12V socket, and the documentation for the USB C car adaptor I bought specifically says not to have any USB device attached while you start the car as it is liable to damage the device. But I imagine there are plenty of adaptors where it's not mentioned, and a lot of folk don't read the documentation anyway. This gives a possible clue. How are you power the pi, is it from the vehicles' 12v source? If you have an combustion engine, the 12v power in the cars are very noisy and can have extremely large spikes. Could that be what's killing your Pis? In the case these are used in ICEs then perhaps what you need is just better regulation between the 12v from the car and the Pis.We were working with a lot of PIs (Model 2) on a research projekt where the PIs were measuring sensor values in cars. We had many PIs that just quit working and we couldn't get them up and running again.Things can and do break from time to time.
Somehow you don't need to buy a new Pi if you don't want another one because it may break like anything else in the world.
I can't remember the last time a oi died on me out of the blue. A few have died because I was not careful with them, but only 1 simply died sitting there all by itself. And I own more then 200 Pi boards.
Get another one. Or don't. Up to you.
