The difficulty of removing an ethernet socket is less than removing a stacked pair of USB3. My recollection is that hundreds or thousands of RPi Model B boards were involved. If it would not have been considered viable for experienced factory rework staff who could have access to suitable equipment .....How is this relevant to a question about replacing the USB 3 ports? There are two types of ethernet jacks. Those with built-in transformers and those without. The former have been specified for all ethernet equipped RPis.
In early 2012 it was reported that a batch, possibly the first production batch, had been assembled with the transformerless, but pin compatible version. I don't know if they were scrapped or reworked. Perhaps one of the old time RPi employees can say.
Update: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17311146 Seems they were reworked.
The "Raspberry Pi on manufacturing hiccup" link on that page is dead. Even changing .org to .com.
