The 4B 8Gbyte was released some time after the 1, 2 and 4 Gbyte versions. Its onboard PSU was different. I think that hardware change and the memory chip required updated file(s). That could explain why an old image boots an old 4B4 but not a 4B8.
It is possible that at some point all memory size 4Bs began to use the same basic board as the 4B8. In which case the old image might not boot a new 4B of any memory size.
Thanks, drgeoff. This information is very helpful. It underscores the importance of me keeping track of which Raspberry Pi was used, when each of my images were archived. I've been pretty good at keeping track of this. However, this helps me realize just how specific I have to be, when archiving these images.
