To address the two above, this distro was PiCore, so based on TinyCore. It has a hosts file in etc, but it gets overwritten with every boot. As I recall (don't bet on it) there wasn't a hostnamectl, but I just wanted to do things the oldest fashioned way and write in values myself rather than use a script or tool that obfuscates what's really going on.
There are "boot" codes in Tiny but even after hours of searching I couldn't find simple (but complete) documentation on setting up static IP settings, and whether boot codes were the right way to handle anyway (at least the host aspect--possibly others), and how that would even work. I really hated the experience of Tiny within 2 short (but eternally long) hours. I gave up.
Downloaded Pi OS lite and since it's based on Debian Bookworm everything was familiar (most everything) and expected.
