What exactly is a Raspberry Pi? They talk about connecting the R.P. to the printer's controller board, so that means that the R.P. is not a controller?? Here's why I ask: My Makerbot Replicator 5th Gen controller board is kaput, so I need to replace it. None are available, so that leaves me looking for an alternative. Not understanding the 2 different boards in the machine makes this infinitely more difficult. The controller board in the back plugs into the power, the actuators and a board in the front that has the LCD and control/selector knob. I don't even know what that one is called! So exactly where does the R.P. come in?? If I have to connect the controller to the R.P. and then I have to flash an O.S. onto the R.P. and then add all the control code, what happens to the O.S. on the original controller?
When using it on a Makerbot, some forums say that you have to replace the Smart Extruder and the thermal whatsitswhatevers. In which case, why can't you simply flash the makerbot O.S. onto the R.P.? Yes, I understand that other O.S. are better, but for me, who doesn't really understand all the bells and whistles that those others have, at least this would get me back up and running, assuming it would work.
Now, if the R.S. is not the controller and simply allows me to put in a different O.S. onto a different controller, can I not simply get a different controller, such as one of the Ender controllers which are readily available, then get a R.P. and use all that to get this printer working? Yes, there's a lot I don't understand about these printers.
Thanks for the help.
