Advanced users • Re: Pi 5 - don't power up the board when power applied - just stay in off mode

To be clear: I'm not suggesting the default behaviour should be changed. I'm just suggesting that it would be handy in some circumstances to be able to configure the behaviour, in the same way that it is often configurable on PC servers, desktops and laptops.

My first Pi 5 is set up as a server sitting doing server things (NAS, Kodi video player, hi-fi music player via DAC on top) so in that case the current default is what I want.

My second Pi 5 I'm currently evaluating as a desktop machine, and in that case it is more convenient for it to be left with power applied but in the off mode. And I would prefer if power is interrupted for any reason to just have it stay off, particularly as screen blanking currently doesn't work with the wayland desktop on my monitor (it waggles the HPD pin so with wayfire it comes back on a few seconds after it gets put into standby, and with labwc as the WM/compositor then wlopm doesn't work for some reason - wlopm reports that HDMI-A-1 is off all the time). Desktop and laptop PCs, at least in my limited experience, generally default to staying off when power is first applied. The user then has to press the power button to switch the system on. I would prefer the same behaviour on my desktop Pi 5, but for me it's not a big issue - it just fits better with how I have things set up for my current main machine - which is an x86_64-based laptop running Windows 11. And how I've always worked. And indeed how ATX power has always worked by default on desktop PCs. (Although again, I do not want, nor would I recommend, changing the default behaviour).

Similarly with the red power light staying on when in off mode. With the desktop Pi 5 in the bedroom I now have this bright red light shining out from the Pi 5. I guess the solution is just to power the Pi down when I'm not using it, or use a case to obscure the red light so it's not quite so bright. I've got it set up with a Pimoroni NVMe base (single drive version), with an official Active Cooler on top, and an official RTC battery stuck onto the top of the Ethernet jack, so it's just sitting there naked, effectively.

There is a power light on the side of my laptop which stays on when power is applied but the system is in the off mode. It's tiny and much less noticeable in the dark. So if there's a Pi 500 in the works then I would certainly recommend considering the size, brightness and location of any power/activity LED carefully so that it more closely follows the general desktop and laptop PC practice of not having bright LEDs on when the system is in the off mode. It would be handy if it were possible to configure Pi 5 in a similar fashion, but for me, it's not a huge issue. It's more of a nice to have.
