Troubleshooting • Re: look giving strange results

Looks like a bug in the version of look supplied by Debian. Definitely on my RP5, I have look coming from the Debian repositories:

Code:

rpi5.pi ~  [0:105] apt show bsdextrautilsPackage: bsdextrautilsVersion: 2.38.1-5+b1Priority: optionalSection: utilsSource: util-linux (2.38.1-5)Maintainer: util-linux packagers <util-linux@packages.debian.org>Installed-Size: 629 kBDepends: libc6 (>= 2.34), libsmartcols1 (>= 2.38), libtinfo6 (>= 6)Conflicts: nwriteBreaks: bsdmainutils (<< 12.1.3), nwriteReplaces: bsdmainutils (<< 12.1.3), nwriteHomepage: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux/Download-Size: 86.9 kBAPT-Manual-Installed: noAPT-Sources: http://deb.debian.org/debian bookworm/main arm64 PackagesDescription: extra utilities from 4.4BSD-Lite This package contains some extra BSD utilities: col, colcrt, colrm, column, hd, hexdump, look, ul and write. Other BSD utilities are provided by bsdutils and calendar.
And (just to change things a bit), I get:

Code:

rpi5.pi ~  [0:110] look amass         rpi5.pi ~  [1:111] grep "^amass" /usr/share/dict/wordsamassamassedamassesamassing
Clearly the words are there, and the dictionary is sorted, as verified above. I note that look on my Mac (OS 14.3 Sonoma) I get a somewhat different result. 'look" works, but the dictionary is different!

Code:

BobsMBP ~  [0:1103] look amass                         amassamassableamasseramassmentBobsMBP ~  [0:1104] grep "^amass" /usr/share/dict/wordsamassamassableamasseramassment
