Next, since the code seems to imply uPython and thus a PICO, try downloading and running it with MPREMOTE. This is the official tool for uPython. It’s saved me a couple of times with Thonny issues.
I'm curious why you think this was with uPython and a PICO? The 'code' involved here is one line: "print('hello world')". Though I have used a PICO with this particular Pi in the past, this project is strictly for the Raspberry Pi itself with standard Python and there is no PICO connected to it. Cheers.
