Factor in that GSM 2G and 3G are getting withdrawn in favour, at least in UK, of 4G and 5G. I had a thing from Vodafone a while back warning they were closing their 3G support.
I did see that given the large number of automatic monitoring sites still using 2G for connectivity there was still a case to retain some support for it. Don't go buying a cheap 2G modem unless its at disposable pricing and you just want to get the basics going. Best go large and go data not SMS.
