There was nothing, the file system had been completely destroyed, gparted showed the whole card as "unallocated".
As I indicated before, you cannot make this claim. gparted primarly looks on the card (just the Linux blockdevice) for a partition table, not for anything higher hierarchy like filesystems or Logical Volume Managers.

Anyway, it is already overwritten, so there is little to do in terms of post-mortem analysis w.r.t. the data on the card anymore. But for future cases, making an image copy of the 'dead'/'empty' card before doing any new writes to it can give some info or hints about what happened. For example, if the card would be really empty, the image would compress to a fraction of its original size.
