Hi, thanks for your help.
On the Pi 3 I have a speaker connected in a USB socket.
How can I play a sound over the network from Zero?

You don't have to play sound over the network. Use any of the before mentioned ways to trigger the Pi 3 into playing the sound. Also, I would use a Pico W for that purpose, using a Zero is waste of power
