I am going after that right now after a marathon work week at my real job. lolI was thinking you could run dmesg after the apt upgrade and before the boot. The IO error is making the upgrade fail in the middle of an important step and that is why the system is not bootable.
The firmware directory being empty when you look at /boot like that is normal. The contents of /boot/firmware/ are in the boot partition, not the root partition.
The problem I might have though is that the apt-get update && apt-get upgrade did not ask any questions if installing anything was OK. And after it finished, no regular known commands worked from the command line. So after running APT-GET the OS (before booting) might be inaccessible. Trying it now...
