Jim, one of the Micropython development team, commented:

The problem is essentially you need to combine three things: the Matter SDK, MicroPython, and the vendor SDK …, and all three of those things expect to be "in charge".

If the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) wishes Matter to happen on MicroPython, they likely need to fork over a big enough donation to make the MicroPython team allocate time to it. I don't know if the RP2xxx SDK has Matter support yet. Without that built in to the SDK, development's going to be much harder.
