I don't understand how (haven't made the effort) how my "script" works. For instance it runs "update-initramfs". I put that command there at that point for a single reason: if it's mounted, lvm must be working and there is no better chance of getting it pulled into initrd.
Those involved in previous discussions will know a bootable (operating system) lvm has been possible with the caveat - manual commands "hunt the kernel" after an update & prior to a reboot - or dead in the water.
The script deliberately does not want to know (iyswim) or it can't move forward.
I had one or two issues with usb: a scsi device being there but inaccessible. I don't think it's an obstacle for other filesystems. Back in the day, way before linux mint supported lvm, I made my PC work with it and it has been automatic since.
