It's amazing how we have had so many posts in the past along the lines of "I would happily pay more for more RAM/faster CPU/RTC/Power button" and yet now we have those things people complain about the price.
Were there that many and are those who said they would pay more the ones complaining that it costs more now ?

I am sure many thought it but there's often an implicit caveat of 'but not that much more'. An original build of $35 Pi, Case, PSU and HDMI cable, cost about $45 all in. An equivalent Pi 5 build will be about $75 for 1GB, $95 for 4GB, $115 for 8GB.

That's quite a jump. Nothing worth worrying about for those who want the best desktop experience, want a desktop replacement, would probably pay $40 more for 16 GB. But for those who merely desired a doubling of RAM or some increase in performance it is quite an increase.
