There are usually two reasons code doesn't work when it should, does for others; you aren't doing something you should be doing, or are doing something you shouldn't. The comparative approach is IMO the best solution for that.
How quickly it's resolved, how soon the D'Oh! moment comes, depends on how quickly one can find something similar to compare with.
For the Pico there are 'pico-examples' which can help, otherwise it's usually a trawl through search engine results.
