General discussion • Re: Raspberry Pi 5 - SSD SATA or SSD NVMe ?

Hello,

I would like to equip my Pi 5 with a SATA 4tb SSD via USB or a Pimoroni board with an 4tb NVMe SSD. My aim is to run Plex with my library on it.

Would you choose the SATA SSD or the NVMe SSD ?

Thanks for your recommendations

Have a nice day
G.
In theory the protocols for NVMe storage are sensible and developed for commercial use while SATA over USB is a consumer product with lower performance and higher error rates.

In practice the Pimoroni board is not compatible with all m.2 NVMe SSDs. Fido claims a power sequencing problem fails to wake up certain SSDs manufactured by Western Digital. I'm not so sure, but check the compatibility list.

USB to SATA bridges come with their own set of compatibility problems. There were reports of USB dropping connection when two drives are connected to the same hub. Fido claims a data retransmission war caused the Linux driver to timeout. Again I'm not sure, but think the kernel was updated to solve this problem.

Unless trying to repurpose a SATA drive pulled from a broken laptop I'd recommend NVMe.
