General discussion • Re: Pi 5 + NVMe SSD as server?

I've been running a Pi5 8GB with an NVMe SSD and a Pimoroni base for a whiel now and it's been solid at PCIe gen2 speeds. I've not tried forcing gen3.

It's noticably faster than SD card but you'll see the most benefit when doing small, random I/O that isn't in the disc cache.

You'll see little to no perofrmance increase in network bound tasks (scraping web sites, serving files, etc) as the upper limit there is set by the network connection or internet connection.

On power consumption, don't assumr that NVMe drives are low power - they often aren't and can use more power than an HDD of siilat capacity.

Oh, and don't expect to get the advertised performance out of the drive. That requires more lanes of a later PCIe generation than the PI has available. And possibly more power too.
