And, just to prove - again, that there' nothing better than posting the question to ease your path to enlightenment ...
pi@Pi3B:~ $ loginctl show-session 1 | grep "Desktop"
Desktop=lightdm-xsession
pi@Pi4B:~ $ loginctl show-session 1 | grep "Desktop"
Desktop=LXDE-pi-x
pi@Pi4B:~ $ loginctl show-session 1 | grep "Desktop"
Desktop=LXDE-pi-wayfire
pi@Pi4B:~ $ loginctl show-session 1 | grep "Desktop"
Desktop=LXDE-pi-labwc
I had tried 'loginctl show-session' previously, but hadn't realised a session number could be applied.

Now to figure out why Python code launched from a remote connection works but the exact same launched under Bookworm are now reporting "Cannot find PyGame module". Used to work so I don't know what's changed.

Linux really does at times feel like an endless journey through Circles of Hell.
