We are still getting started in RPi OS and generally Unix/Linux/GNU where it has been, and likely still be forever, a land of 'yacc, yet another c compiler or GPSDO, xxx'. In spirit of trying, doing and making...I would turn this around and ask the OP...what do you want to do? With that information, people can suggest specific applications programs that are in the repositories.
The value of a "semi-official" list, in a parallel universe of chossing hardware sensor chips, search chip part number and if it has many github projects, it is a perferred chip (likely it works better and hence popular. or just easier to find worked example when it is an old chip).
